London – Day 1

Today I got to meet my service dog!!!! Her name is London.  She is an 11 month old Golden Retriever.  The trainers brought the dogs in one by one to meet their new families.  The trainer sat with us for about 10 minutes.  There are like 14 dogs in my class, so that took the whole morning.  London and I became best friends instantly (mostly because I had a bag of her breakfast food).  We spent the morning just spending time together.  I was really impressed with how calm and loving London was with me already.  She event laid with me for a bit without being told to.  I got to take her out for a short walk before giving her a break for lunch.

After lunch, my mommy and daddy got to “work” with London.  They had to practice learning to give her basic commands like “sit,”  “down,” and “free.” Did you know that London is trained to hold that command, without being told to stay, until she get s a new command?!   “Free” means that London is released from her last command.

I was really impressed with the trainers. Jeremy, he’s in charge of training, has trained over 5000 dogs.  London’s trainer was Shelby.  Every time Shelby walks by, London perks up. Over the next two weeks London will learn more and more that my mommy and daddy are her handlers.

I was sad at the end of the day.  I had to send London back to 4 Paws for the night.  But on Wednesday I get to bring her to my hotel room and then she will stay with us forever!  Check out all of my pictures from training!
